"Under Construction"
At VALA NC, learning is designed to be an active, student-driven process where students construct knowledge by engaging with real-world problems, collaborating with peers, and applying concepts across disciplines. This approach, grounded in constructivist learning theory, is supported through project-based learning (PBL), inquiry-based tasks, and collaborative problem-solving. In addition, VALA NC incorporates team-based learning (TBL)—where students work in structured teams to complete rigorous, application-focused tasks—and flipped learning, which delivers content outside of class so that in-class time can be used for deeper engagement and discussion. Together, these strategies ensure that students are not passive recipients of information but are empowered as thinkers, creators, and problem-solvers.
At VALA NC, adaptability is at the heart of personalized learning. Instead of every student following the same path, each learner has a customized, constantly evolving learning journey. Our AI-powered platforms track how students learn—how they answer questions, which skills they have mastered, and where they may need help—and then adjust lessons in real time. This means students receive work that is not too easy and not too hard, but just right for their current level. Teachers play an active, hands-on role in this process. During our WIN (What I Need) Block sessions, teachers use live data dashboards to understand each student’s progress and provide targeted support. Students who need extra help receive focused reteaching, guided practice, or peer support, while students who are ready for more advanced work can dive into enrichment activities, projects, or cross-disciplinary challenges. This adaptive learning model ensures that every student moves steadily toward mastery at the pace that fits them best—so no one falls behind, and no one feels held back.
At VALA NC, accountability is more than checking boxes or meeting a single requirement; it is a shared schoolwide commitment to being open, honest, and always improving. Everyone plays a role in this culture. Teachers use data to track learning progress, administrators monitor school operations, board members provide oversight, and students and families stay informed about expectations and results. Clear and measurable indicators guide our work in academics, daily operations, and financial stewardship. By using evidence to make decisions, following strong ethical practices, and keeping information accessible to our community, VALA NC ensures that every stakeholder can see how the school is performing and how we are continually striving to grow and get better.
At VALA NC, authentic learning experiences connect academic concepts to real-world relevance through interdisciplinary projects, internships, and industry mentorship. Students engage in quarterly Virtual Innovation Expos where they present solutions to real-world challenges—designed in partnership with leading Research Triangle Park (RTP) companies. Through these partnerships, students not only analyze real datasets and prototype solutions, but also participate in virtual or in-person internships and receive direct mentorship from science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) professionals. These experiences extend beyond content delivery, transforming virtual learning into experiential, purpose-driven education. Grounded in experiential learning theories, VALA NC’s approach integrates project-based learning (PBL), design thinking, and team-based inquiry processes to foster critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. By working side-by-side with experts and applying classroom learning to professional contexts, students develop career readiness, confidence, and the skills necessary to thrive in a rapidly evolving STEM workforce.
At VALA NC, equity and inclusion are not simply priorities; they are foundational design principles. VALA NC’s instructional framework is built upon Universal Design for Learning (UDL), a scientifically validated approach that proactively anticipates learner variability and removes barriers to participation and success. Through flexible instructional design, adaptive technologies, multilingual supports, and active family engagement, VALA NC ensures that every student—regardless of background, ability, or circumstance—has equitable access to rigorous learning opportunities.
