At VALA NC, learning is built around the PRISMA Learning Cycle, a simple and engaging approach that helps students stay actively involved throughout the day.
Instead of just watching lessons, students prepare for learning, participate in live instruction, work with classmates, practice what they learn, and apply their knowledge in meaningful, real-world ways.
Each day follows a clear and consistent structure that helps students stay focused and supported. Learning includes a combination of:
Guided readiness activities (before lessons)
Live teacher-led instruction
Small-group learning and support
Independent and adaptive practice
Hands-on and project-based activities
Reflection and goal-setting
This balanced approach keeps students engaged while helping them build independence and confidence over time.
Learning at VALA NC happens through short, interactive cycles that help students understand and apply what they learn.
Prepare
(Guided Readiness)
Students prepare for learning through short, teacher-guided activities—such as videos, readings, or quick checks—completed before the live class (typically in the evening as brief homework assignment). This helps students come to class ready to participate and engage.
Respond
(Individual Quick Check)
Students independently engage with the material through brief, low-stakes activities such as brain dumps, multiple-choice questions, or short responses. This helps activate prior knowledge and check initial understanding.
Interact
(Collaborative Learning)
Students work in small groups in breakout rooms to discuss ideas, solve problems, and learn from one another. This collaborative step builds communication skills, deepens understanding, and promotes active engagement.
Support
(Teacher Feedback and Mini-Lesson )
Teachers provide targeted support through mini-lessons, guided discussion, and feedback. Misconceptions are addressed, and instruction is adjusted to ensure all students are progressing.
Measure
(Exit Check)
Students complete a short, graded exit quiz to demonstrate their understanding. Teachers use this data to monitor progress and determine next steps.
Based on results, students receive targeted support or enrichment during the daily "What I Need” (WIN) block.
Apply
(Real-World Learning and Extension)
Students apply their learning through projects, problem-solving tasks, and real-world applications (STEAM and project-based learning).
This step helps students deepen understanding and transfer knowledge to new situations.
Students deepen their understanding by actively applying their knowledge through:
Projects and investigations
Problem-solving activities
Discussions and collaboration
Real-world connections
This ensures that learning is meaningful—not just memorized.
Personalized Support for Every Student
Teachers continuously monitor student progress and provide support when needed. Through small groups, one-on-one help, and adaptive tools, instruction is adjusted to meet each student’s needs.
The daily WIN (“What I Need”) block provides targeted support or enrichment so every student can succeed.
Building Independent and Confident Learners
As students grow, they develop important life skills such as:
Time management
Goal setting
Self-reflection
Responsibility for their learning
These skills prepare students for success in school and beyond.
Active – students participate and engage
Personalized – instruction adapts to student needs
Supportive – teachers guide and monitor progress
Meaningful – learning connects to real life
Our goal is to ensure every student is engaged, supported, and empowered to succeed.
